Shiver Review

Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1)Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

First to address: I love werewolves and finding new books that feature them. I must say I'm more often disappointed in their depiction than happy. I suppose I have my own romantic views of them as a species (no matter how fictional). Maggie's werewolves are how I like them to be...not monstrous and blood-thirsty, but real wolves. It's a toss-up on the wolves that are humanly conscious or primal animals, but I've seen both done well. Maggie does it well. And more importantly, the new take on what causes the shifts is fresh and wonderful. Just like vampires, no matter than they're mythical, they still tend to take on the shape of previous stories, sticking with the same themes and ideas. It was about time we had a new perspective on why the werewolf changes.

The story itself is a beautiful romance. Full of long-term love realized and longing for one another, knowing the end nearly before it's even started. It's just like any summer love; it usually only lasts the summer and then reality comes crashing back down. It makes the experience bittersweet but incredibly special. I think Maggie captured these emotions marvelously.

I'm waiting, quite impatiently, to get my hands on the sequel.

Concentration Issues

I recently started a very drastic change in diet. It's really just suppose to jump start the system, so it only lasts for about a month (thank goodness!). But I don't get to eat very much and there isn'y anything allowed that I can just sit and munch on aimlessly. Which I know is bad for me, but it's something I like to do when I write. Brain fuel.

What little I've gotten written today seems jumpy. I'm not sure I'll produce anything of substance while I suffer from this. I will get used to it, as it's only my second day today, but I'm definitely feeling the effects.

I think I'll just try taking a break until I can properly feed myself again.

Book Love

I decided it was time to branch off slightly from my own personal journal to begin keeping one solely for my writing.

My current work is in some heavy revision stages and my main character is teaching me some things about her that I didn't know beforehand, and I'm really liking the one-on-one time we've had together.

I've also decided that I need to study some teen fiction in high volume, as teen fiction is a fairly new genre and not one really established when I was a young reader.

But no bother; I love to read! I've picked through some review blogs written by teens--as I'm going to assume this is where I'll get some of my best information and opinions--and chosen some titles based on what I've read there. I also think actually writing my own review will be beneficial to me, so I've set up a Goodreads section for myself here.

Now, no more distracting myself with blogs and fun websites. Back to work.

Butt in chair, fingers on keyboard!
